Gear Up, Guardians - Destiny’s Iron Banner Is Live

by Mike Futter on Oct 07, 2014 at 08:09 AM

Now that today’s Destiny hotfix has been applied, you can jump back on your Sparrow and cruise around the solar system. If the Crucible is where you like to spend your time though, you might want to pit your best gear against that of other Guardians.

The Iron Banner is a player-vs-player mode that doesn’t equalize damage and armor for players. Instead, the quality of your guns and gear matters greatly.

Pick up Iron Banner bounties in order to increase your rank. At the first benchmark, you’ll unlock the ability to purchase a shader and emblem. Equipping those enables a 10 percent boost to reputation earned (each).

Rank 2 awards you the option to purchase class items. Again, these will nudge you ahead by 10 percent when you wear them and earn reputation.

At the top level, you can get Iron Banner armor, another emblem, and a second shader. There are also legendary weapons to earn by playing.

The Iron Banner event runs today through October 14. Happy hunting. For more on Destiny, check out our review.

Our Take
While the Queen’s Wrath event did offer Crucible bounties, it was largely PvE focused. Iron Banner gives PvP players an opportunity to flex their muscles, show off their gear, and earn some new loot. It’s not my cup of tea, but Bungie is doing a decent job straddling the line between cooperative and competitive opportunities.
