Kickstarter Game Funding Down Dramatically In 2014
Despite the continued hype surrounding crowdfunding, Kickstarter pledges for video game projects are slumping so far in 2014.
An article in CVG cites a new study by ICO Partners analyst Thomas Bidaux, comparing the pace of Kickstarter funding in 2013 to this year so far. Right now, $13.5 million has been pledged to Kickstarter game projects. If the current pace continues, that will end the year's total at approximately $27 million. In comparison, game Kickstarters raised over $58 million in 2013.
Bidaux speculates that the gap is due in part to the fact that 2013 had some wildly successful projects like Mighty No. 9 and Torment: Tides of Numeria and speculates that some high-profile Kickstarter failures have made consumers more skeptical about crowdfunding.

Our Take
I hope this trend reverses by the year's end; Kickstarter has been a great resource for indie developers. Despite some high profile failures like Yogventures!, there have been many more success stories of games that delivered high quality for their contributions.
