New 3DS Models Come To Australia This Year, Too

by Mike Futter on Sep 24, 2014 at 03:45 AM

Before we get started, we should recap a couple things. Nintendo announced some new 3DS models that are very pretty (decorated in the themes of the original NES, Super Smash Bros., and Persona Q). Those aren’t the “New 3DS” though, because that’s that name of a redesign for the 3DS and 3DS XL.

The new handheld boasts improved 3D, repositioned buttons, and an additional, tiny right analog control. It also will support games, like a port of Xenoblade Chronicles, that won’t be compatible with the 3DS or 3DS XL you own right now.

The new handhelds are coming to Japan this year, and today Nintendo has announced that one more territory will have them before the end of 2014. Those of you in Australia and New Zealand will be able to purchase a New 3DS on November 21.

Those of us in North America and Europe will be waiting until 2015. Take heart though, Super Smash Bros. on 3DS (or 3DS XL or 2DS) is only nine days away. For more on the New 3DS, check out our rundown of everything you need to know.

Our Take
I was so hopeful that Nintendo would tweak the name of its revised handheld spec for English-speaking countries. I expect huge confusion at retail among parents and less-informed consumers.

This makes two releases in a row that Nintendo is hamstringing itself with nomenclature. The company still experiences confusion over the Wii U name, and I’m surprised it hasn’t learned this lesson.
