Why Ice Climbers Aren’t In The New Super Smash Bros

by Ben Reeves on Sep 17, 2014 at 12:15 PM

Fans of Super Smash Bros. Melee will remember throwing down dual hammers with Nintendo’s 8-bit tag team, the Ice Climbers. The well-insulated brawlers weren’t the most popular fighters in Smash Bros. history, but that’s not why they didn’t make it into the upcoming Smash Bros. release. The truth is a bit more technical.

A recent issue of the Japanese magazine, Smash Bros. director Masahiro Sakurai talked about the game’s roster, stating that the team actually got the Ice Climbers up and running on the Wii U version of Super Smash Bros., but couldn’t overcome the technical challenges facing the 3DS version, and were forced to cut the duo from both rosters, since the company wanted to keep the titles nearly identical. This is unfortunate for Ice Climber fans, but it’s interesting to get a small look into the early development of the game.

Our Take
This seem strange. I would have thought that the 3DS was nearly as powerful as a console that was almost 15-years-old, but I guess not. Maybe we'll still get to see the Ice Climbers as DLC for the Wii U version of the game. Or we could just live without them, and our lives would go on.
