Destiny Is The Largest New IP Launch In UK History

by Mike Futter on Sep 15, 2014 at 06:32 AM

Activision’s big bet on Destiny is starting to pay off. The company announced last week that the title has shipped $500 million worth of units to retail. Today, another milestone has been announced.

According GfK Chart Track, Destiny is the biggest new IP launch in history in the UK. Earlier this year, Activision CEO Bobby Kotick promised investors that the title would reach that mark worldwide.

Destiny bumps Watch Dogs off the top of the UK sales list for the year. Chart Track breaks down platform sales, with 46 percent going to PS4, 36 percent on Xbox One, 14 percent on Xbox 360, and 4 percent on PS3. This includes the PS4 bundle sales.

Destiny’s first major post-launch content, the game’s first raid, will be live this week. If you’ve hit the soft level cap of 20 and pushed past that with “light” to 26, you’re ready for the Vault of Glass.

Our Take
With a game like Destiny, shipping is just the first test. Eyes will continue to be watching Bungie and Activision as post-launch content rolls out.

The proof is whether Destiny can hold the attention of players through the busy fall season and into next year. I keep coming back to it with enthusiasm, and I hope that feeling sticks around.
