Spec Ops: The Line Lead Writer Walt Williams Departs 2K Games

by Mike Futter on Sep 08, 2014 at 02:52 AM

Walt Williams, who is credited as lead writer on Spec Ops: The Line, has announced his departure from publisher 2K Games. Williams, who has been with 2K since mid-2005, says he will be staying in the game industry.

More recently, Williams is credited as a senior writer on Civilization: Beyond Earth (due out in October) and Evolve (due out in February 2015). He is also credited on approximately 20 other 2K titles as a game analyst and production assistant.

Williams says that there won’t be a “next game” for him for a while, however he indicates that he’ll be working on books. Williams has not yet said where he’ll be employed next.

Our Take
Given the number of properties that have expanded fiction (Halo and Assassin’s Creed among the many), a move like this makes a lot of sense. This is a chance for Williams to tell stories related to the interactive medium without the stutter-step of player interaction that can break up the narrative flow.
