TSI Announces Seven Dragon Saga

by Matt Miller on Sep 03, 2014 at 01:03 PM

Anyone who played computer role-playing games in the 80s and 90s likely remembers the gold box RPG games from SSI. Including titles like Pool of Radiance, Curse of the Azure Bonds, and Champions of Krynn, these great games  offered hundreds of hours of exploration and combat based in the Advanced Dungeons & Dragons ruleset of the period. Some of the alumni from SSI have come together to form TSI, and the team has announced the game they hope to continue in the gold box legacy – Seven Dragon Saga.

The setting for Seven Dragon Saga is described as a “high-powered fantasy universe, revolving around the Empire of the Seven Dragons.” Players control heroes that are already powerful and dangerous as the game begins, and the gameplay focuses on turn-based party combat. TSI is also promising a campaign focused on meaningful story choices that change the course of the game world.

The digital game is based upon an unreleased tabletop system designed by Keith Brors and David Shelley, both of whom came out of SSI’s glory days in the 80s and 90s. An early look at the art and details on the setting seem to balance evenly between classic fantasy and wuxia-style martial arts action.

Our Take
I adored the gold box RPGs that SSI produced, and the thought of new games in that same style has me both nostalgic for the old and excited to see what’s new. However,  Seven Dragon Saga seems like it’s still very much in a conceptual phase, so I’m settling in for a long wait.
