Nintendo is known for improving and iterating on its handheld hardware. Even going back as far as the original Game Boy, these systems have had incarnations in various sizes with different features. Nintendo continues the trend with the New 3DS, but not all games released for the system will be compatible with older versions of the 3DS hardware.

This morning, Nintendo announced that the excellent Xenoblade Chronicles (read our review here), formerly a Wii exclusive, will be coming to the New 3DS. However, if you have a regular 3DS (or a 2DS), the game won't play on those systems.

Is this a good move for Nintendo? Exclusive titles certainly help drive hardware sales, but on the other hand, it could lead to confusion regarding which games will play on which 3DS-branded system – especially if we see more exclusives in the future.
