No, You Can’t Trade Weapons With Your Friends In Destiny

by Mike Futter on Aug 26, 2014 at 02:17 AM

“This is my rifle. There are many like it, but this one is mine.” Bungie is taking the U.S. Marine Rifle Creed to heart, as the developer has just announced that players will form an unbreakable bond with their Destiny weaponry.

You will not be able to trade weapons and gear with other players. You will however be able to move those armaments among your own characters. Bungie clarified the news in the most recent weekly update.

“We want you to earn ‘em. You should be able to tell a badass story for every sweet jewel in your arsenal,” writes Bungie community manager David “Deej” Dague. “Once you earn them, the various Guardians under your account will be able to trade them, but weapons belong to the players who acquire them through action and bravery.”

Many MMOs feature the ability to swap items with other players or sell them via an in-game marketplace. Those same titles often feature account-locked items that can’t be traded.

For more on Destiny, check out our coverage of the beta. The title will be out on September 9 for Xbox One, Xbox 360, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation 3.

Our Take
During the beta, we noted that loot drops are not nearly as frequent as some MMOs or Action-RPGs. Destiny isn’t Borderlands, nor is it Diablo. Still, I’m not sure how I feel about this decision yet. I’ll reserve judgment until I play more of the final game.

One thing’s for sure, though. Bungie wanted to differentiate Destiny from other MMO-style shooters. This decision certainly helps accomplish that goal.
