Former Rare Composer Says Banjo-Kazooie Spiritual Successor Is Dead

by Tim Turi on Apr 23, 2014 at 11:30 AM

Awhile back former Rare composer, Grant Kirkhope (Banjo Kazooie, GoldenEye 007), said he hoped former Rare employees would start work on a spiritual follow-up to the Banjo Kazooie series. Today, Kirkhope confirmed the project’s early demise.

Reddit user Twisty_Tie asked Kirkhope about the likelihood of the Banjo Kazooie spiritual successor during an Ask Me Anything thread on the site.

Kirkhope says, “The other guys actually had a secret meeting in a pub near Rare and we even got as far as having a character drawn up and a demo level type thing but it all fell to bits .... everyone's got other jobs etc”

Kirkhope’s recent projects include Yaiba: Ninja Gaiden Z, Desktop Dungeons, and Kingdom’s of Amulur: Reckoning.

Our Take
I’m a huge fan of the Banjo Kazooie games and the rest of Rare’s classic catalog, so this news comes as a hit to me. Hopefully Kirkhope and other Rare alum will come together creatively in other ways. Until then, we can only hope Microsoft does something interesting with the official Banjo Kazooie license.
