Nintendo Needed The Power Of The Wii U For NES Remix

by Mike Futter on Apr 21, 2014 at 12:06 PM

Nintendo is getting ready to release its second NES Remix title (our review of the first). The minigame collection puts unique twists on 8-bit Nintendo games, similar to some found in the WarioWare titles.

Speaking with IGN, director Koichi Hayashida says that he was familiar with the system from his work on Mario 3D World. That isn’t the only reason, though. “In order to accomplish what we wanted with NES Remix, and get the effect we wanted out of it and the value that we wanted it to have, we needed some more machine power,” he said.

He doesn’t say that a 3DS version would have been impossible, but that it would have been more difficult. NES Remix 2 will be out this Friday, April 25.

Our Take
It’s hard to imagine that with games like Bravely Default, Pokémon X and Y, The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds, and countless others that the 3DS couldn’t easily handle NES Remix. The title isn’t much different than the WarioWare games on DS. I believe that the Wii U was more familiar to Hayashida and, therefore, easier to develop for. I am skeptical that the title needs the power of the Wii U.
