April Xbox One System Update Coming Tonight

by Mike Futter on Apr 14, 2014 at 03:37 PM

Xbox One owners, you can expect to get your April update sometime in the next few hours. If you were in the preview group, you already know what to expect. If not, here’s what’s coming very soon. If you weren't, Microsoft's Larry Hryb says that group will be growing in the near future.

The two biggest are friend “toasts” which let you know when people on our friends list come online and improvements to Game DVR compression quality. The update also brings visual improvements that will let you know which games and apps are being updated or have recently a patch.

This update also includes Kinect voice and motion improvements, blu-ray support for 50 Hz content, controller and headset adapter firmware updates to reduce static and improve connectivity, and silent rebooting after update if you use the “instant on” feature.

Our Take
I like getting these updates on a more frequent basis rather than waiting for two big dashboard overhauls each year. I still have real name IDs on my wish list as well as support for external storage options. We’ll let you know as soon as we have details on the next feature rollout.
