Runic Co-founders Form New Studio Double Damage Games

by Ben Reeves on Mar 27, 2014 at 02:58 PM

Travis Baldree and Erich Schaefer formed Runic games and helped bring the Torchlight series into the world. Now they're starting a new journey at a new studio called Double Damage Games.

Earlier today, Baldree took to Runic's forums to talk about his upcoming departure on April 2, "I should say from the outset that this is an amicable departure, that I consider the amazing team at Runic my friends and family, and that it is a privilege that they've let me get away with running the place for this long. I love them all, and the biggest downside to all of this is that I won't get to see them every day. They are the reason that Runic has succeeded, and are the best group of people you could hope to meet or work with."

Baldree didn't talk about what game he'll be working on, but did say that it would be a smaller title "within the boundaries of limited means and resources."

Baldree and Schaefer co-founded nearly six years ago and helped bring Torchlight and Torchlight II to market.

Our Take
I think this sounds exciting for Travis Baldree and Erich Schaefer. Sometimes you have to follow your dreams and all that junk. I thought both Torchlight games were a lot of fun, and I look forward to seeing what these two cook up in the future.
