Torchlight Developer Co-Founders Depart Studio

by Kyle Hilliard on Mar 26, 2014 at 03:02 PM

Runic Games co-founders – the development studio behind Torchilight and its sequel – have announced their departure from the studio.

Travis Baldree and Erich Schaefer, who have a history with Blizzard the Diablo series, have announced their plans to leave the studio they co-founded. On Runic Games' message boards Baldree wrote, "It is with the strangest mixture of elation, fondness, fear, and bitter-sweetness that I'm announcing my departure from Runic Games." Baldree is also quick to point out in his post that the split is entirely amicable. He and Schaefer are leaving together with plans to get into smaller-scale development.

April 2 will be their last day with the studio. For our review of Torchlight II, which released in 2012, head here.

Our Take
I'm happy for Baldree and Schaefer. They seem excited to branch off on their own again. I never thought of Runic as a large studio, however. The Torchlight games feel very independent, but apparently it wasn't quite as small as Baldree and Schaefer liked. I wish them both luck in their future endeavors, as well as continued success for Runic.
