Hotline Miami Confirmed For PlayStation 4 Release

by Mike Futter on Mar 24, 2014 at 03:11 AM

Dennaton Games is bringing its ultra-violent, neon-washed Hotline Miami to Sony’s newest console. Devolver Digital’s Nigel Lowrie shared the news at last week’s Game Developers Conference.

In speaking with Destructoid, Lowrie says that the title will be available with cross-buy, meaning that if you already own it on PS3 and Vita, you’ll automatically get it for PlayStation 4. “We’re just going to keep it cross-buy, because we feel that if the users bought it on a PlayStation platform, they have a right to own it on PlayStation 4,” Lowrie says.

Hotline Miami joined the PlayStation Plus Instant Game Collection in October 2013, so if you were a member at the time and activated your license, you're all set. Hotline Miami 2: Wrong Number, which was announced at E3 2013, is in development for PC, PlayStation 4, and Vita. Dennaton Games will be releasing its sequel, the final in the Hotline Miami series, later this year. For more, check out our review of the original and our preview of the sequel.

Our Take
It’s uncommon for developers to use the cross-buy system when there’s a staggered platform release, because it significantly impacts the revenue profile. Devolver Digital isn’t like other publishers though, and this move evidences the company’s consumer-friendly approach. Given that this title was available for PlayStation Plus members as part of the Instant Game Collection, bringing Hotline Miami to PS4 is an investment in good will.
