More Than 10 Percent Of Content Sold In PlanetSide 2 Is User Created

by Cameron Koch on Mar 19, 2014 at 09:08 AM

Free-to-play MMO FPS PlanetSide 2 is known for its massive battles, but a new video detailing the success of player created content might make it known for massive paychecks as well. Using the game's Player Studio, some players have made thousands of dollars by creating and selling their cosmetic creations to other players in the PlanetSide 2 marketplace.

You can check out the video above to hear from some of the game's most successful content creators and check out some surprising stats about the program. The Player Studio lets players download sample geometry files that can then be re-colored, re-textured, and reshaped into their own personalized item. Players can then submit their creations to SOE for approval, and if approved, receive 40 percent of what their item earns on the game's marketplace.

Since the Player Studio's creation in July 2013, more than 2,000 items have been created and 469 of them have made their way to the Marketplace. In the months of January and February, Player Studio creations made up more than 10 percent of all items purchased on the marketplace, and 35 percent of all cosmetic purchases were player created.

Currently players can create camo patterns and helmets, but players in the future can look forward to designing melee weapons, optics, and vehicle attachments. You can check out our in-depth interview with the game's senior art director Tramell Isaac here to learn more about the future of PlanetSide 2.

Our Take:
Letting players express their creativity, and earn cash for doing it, seems like a win-win. As long as players are compensated fairly for their work, I can see this program continuing to grow.
