Final Testing Underway On SimCity Offline

by Mike Futter on Mar 14, 2014 at 05:35 AM

Maxis has announced that its next SimCity update, which will include the option to play offline, is now in final testing. The move to cut the cord was announced in January.

The online play is not affected, and those that have been building as part of multiplayer regions can continue to do so. Offline mode will enable local saves, so players can use the game without an active connection.

Offline mode will also introduce the ability to mod the game in limited ways. SimCity was released in early 2013, but met with server problems and the resultant critical and consumer backlash.

Our Take
There is no doubt that this endeavor has cost EA and Maxis a great deal of money, with likely very little reward. The short-term gain is minimal, but this move might serve as a final, positive footnote on the SimCity saga and salvage the brand name.
