SXSW is in full swing, and as we reported yesterday, Telltale Games and Gearbox joined forces for a panel focused on their new collaboration. Tales from the Borderlands, which was first announced at VGX in December 2013, combines Gearbox’s Borderlands world with Telltale’s storytelling and gameplay.

The lead characters, Rhys and Fiona, are not vault hunters. More importantly, their perspective on the events are different, leading to an “unreliable narrator,” a storytelling technique that was used to great effect in 2013’s Call of Juarez: Gunslinger.

Our Take
If Telltale hadn’t proven itself with Back to the Future, The Walking Dead, and The Wolf Among Us, I’d be skeptical of this partnership. However, combining the diverse population and fauna of Pandora with Telltale’s approach to storytelling has me excited for the potential. The studio has bitten off a lot recently (a Game of Thrones announcement was made at VGX, too). I just hope it’s not too much.
