Reader Discussion: Are Achievements And Trophies Important To You?

by Kyle Hilliard on Mar 08, 2014 at 11:30 AM

Some people love them. Some people hate them. Some people are completely oblivious to them. Where do you fall on the spectrum?

I have always been a big fan. Every year for the past three years, I’ve put together a list of my favorites. You can see 2011, 2012, and 2013 lists at the links. I’m no Raymond Cox, who should be hitting 1,000,000 Gamerscore soon, but I am always happy to see them appear on screen. I care less about my score or the number associated with it. I just like having a database I can reference of what I have been doing in all of the video games I have played.

I understand the argument some make about how they can distract from the experience when they pop on screen. They can cancel out some of the immersion with the reminder you’re playing a game, or worse – encourage you to play terrible games for a higher score. I think these arguments are reasonable, but it doesn’t change my opinion. I’m still a huge fan.

How about you?
