Square Enix Moves Six Million Copies Of Tomb Raider In First Year
Tomb Raider turns one year old this week, and Square Enix and developer Crystal Dynamics are taking the opportunity to celebrate. The title, which appears on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, Xbox One, Xbox 360, and PC, has sold nearly 6 million units, and is on track to beat that by the end of March.
This celebratory tone is a significant change from the disappointing one that accompanied early reports of Tomb Raider sales. Square Enix had exceedingly high expectations for the title, which set franchise sales records by the end of its first month with 3.4 million units sold.
Square Enix had set expectations between five and six million for Lara’s latest adventure. Despite not breaking into the black until January, a sequel was leaked last summer, with confirmation in August 2013.

Square Enix’s expectations for the game in its first month were extremely ambitious to the point of being unreasonable. I’m glad that Tomb Raider is now being recognized for its quality and sales. I’m ready for Tomb Raider 2, Crystal Dynamics.
