Xbox One March Update Brings Dolby Surround Via Digital Optical

by Mike Futter on Feb 28, 2014 at 10:50 AM

Surround sound headset owners will be happy to hear that the March Xbox One update has something special for them. A missing feature makes its return alongside social updates and the new chat adapter.

Polygon has received an image from a preview participant showing the new bitstream option that enables surround sound via digital optical. This allows virtual surround generated from a multi-channel signal rather than upscaled from stereo.

If you have a Turtle Beach, Astro, Tritton, or other headset that receives game audio via digital optical connection, you’ll be all set after the update rolls out to the public before Titanfall’s release. For chat, you’ll still need the new adapter.

Our Take
This is fantastic news for anyone that plays competitive shooters with personal audio. I’ve missed having Dolby output for my headset, and look forward to taking advantage of this.
