Final Fantasy Tactics Designer Provides New Details About Unsung Story

by Joe Juba on Feb 03, 2014 at 11:48 AM

Yasumi Matsuno is the mind behind strategic classics like Final Fantasy Tactics and Tactics Ogre, and he recently provided an update on the design concepts for his new mobile game, Unsung Story.

The game, published by Playdek, is another tactical RPG. The latest developer update lays out some of the basic information and design approaches being used by Matsuno and his team. Some of the highlights include:

  • About 25 playable stages at launch
  • There is no single main character. Players follow common soldiers throughout the course of the war, but they still keep their party together as the game goes on.
  • The battle system will not be drastically different from Tactics Ogre or FF Tactics
  • Five classes primary classes are available (and multiple secondary classes), and characters can switch among them

Check out the full update for the full picture.

Unsung Story is currently in the midst of Kickstarter campaign to raise $600,000 for PC and Mac versions in addition to the already-announced Android and iOS editions. If Matsuno's approach to the game's design sounds cool to you, consider contributing.

Our Take
There's no denying Matsuno's skill when it comes to tactical combat, and these details point to things being on a good path in terms of the design. I have high hopes for Unsung Story; I'll probably play it on my phone if the Kickstarter doesn't succeed, but I'd much rather have a PC version, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed.
