Watch Dogs For Wii U Canceled
Tonight, during Nintendo’s investor conference, we were made aware of a list of titles coming to the 3DS and Wii U through 2014 and beyond. There was one notable absence: Watch Dogs.
We followed up with Ubisoft immediately following the presentation to get clarity on this omission. A company representative tells us that the Wii U version of the game is, in fact, canceled.
Ubisoft has been a staunch supporter of the platform. Speaking with CEO Yves Guillemot in 2013, we were reassured that the publisher was standing by Nintendo despite flagging sales of the Wii U console. Nintendo’s recent sales forecast revision indicates that while the numbers are improving, the install base isn’t growing fast enough.
Our Take
The loss of an Ubisoft flagship title is both a major blow to Nintendo and a bellwether of what to expect moving forward. I don’t expect that Ubisoft will cut ties entirely, but I certainly wouldn’t count on continued blanket support for the Wii U.
