Rumor: Pixar Tapped To Make Star Wars Animated Film

by Matt Helgeson on Jan 22, 2014 at 12:50 PM

A movie news site is reporting that the powerhouse animation house Pixar will be developing a Star Wars film for parent company Disney.

The Latino Review published the report, writing, "It was only a matter of time before Disney's golden child animation acquisition was brought into the company franchise game. John Lasseter [Pixar's chief creative officer - Ed.] doubling his time at Disney Animation is a good cog in the machine, but there comes an opportunity to mix two potentially profitable brands together and see if the success can exponentially multiply. Or that must be the thinking at Disney, because we've heard that Pixar has been given their own Star Wars movie."

The Latino Review gives few details on the rumored project, and does acknowledge that it could be a long way off given Pixar's already full slate of films in production.

Our Take
In a lot of ways, this makes sense. Pixar is perhaps the most reliably bankable studio in Hollywood, and combining its talents with the proven Star Wars brand would seem to be license to print money for Disney. If true, this could be a genuinely exciting new direction for a franchise that desperately needs it.
