Zynga Now Testing Bitcoin Payments In Farmville And Other Games

by Matt Helgeson on Jan 07, 2014 at 04:07 AM

The free-to-play giant is hopping on the bitcoin bandwagon, and is current testing accepting bitcoin payments in a number of its most popular titles.

On Reddit, a company representative posted:

"In response to Bitcoin's rise in popularity around the world, Zynga, with help from BitPay, is testing expanded payment options for players to make in-game purchases using Bitcoin. The Bitcoin test is only available to Zynga.com players playing FarmVille 2, CastleVille, ChefVille, CoasterVille, Hidden Chronicles, Hidden Shadows and CityVille."

As of this writing, one bitcoin is worth $933.60 U.S. dollars.

Our Take:
It's an interesting move by Zynga, though I wonder if this was done more for publicity reasons than the thought that it will have any meaningful impact on the company's bottom line. Still, it's another sign that bitcoin is gainging more acceptance. I feel like we're heading for some crazy Blade Runner dystopia people, we might as well be able to play Farmville when we get there.
