ToeJam & Earl III Now Available On Dreamcast

by Kyle Hilliard on Dec 28, 2013 at 05:11 AM

ToeJam & Earl III began its life as a Dreamcast exclusive before Microsoft snapped it up for Xbox. Someone has found the unreleased Dreamcast version of the game, and made it available online to download for anyone who is interested.

According to the poster, ZakhooiTM on Assembler Games, where the game is available to download, this beta version of the game was found on a Dreamcast devkit purchased through eBay. ZakhooiTM isn't a fan of the series or was even seeking it out. They are just a fan of the art of video game development and sort of stumbled upon it.

The game is being released without the permissions of the original owners, but ZakhooiTM is not seeking any profit for the game and is clear that it should never be sold or pressed to a disc. For those that have expressed interested in compensating ZakhooiTM for getting the game up and running (which did require some work and programming), they ask that money be donated to the Mardan School, which you can do here.

If you're unfamiliar with the ToeJam & Earl series, please allow Jeff Cork to tell you why it is awesome. You can also read about Naughty Dog co-president Evan Wells' work on Toejam & Earl In Panic On Funkotron, which was the first commercial game he ever developed for.

Our Take
I appreciate how completely random it is that this game has suddenly appeared in the wild. We haven't heard from ToeJam & Earl in quite some time. This could be the closest thing to a new release we see anytime soon.
