In so many ways, the Wii U gamepad would be an ideal tool for playing Minecraft. Inventory and recipes easily displayed on the gamepad screen, and touch-powered building would present new opportunities. It’s a shame that it won’t happen anytime soon.

Yesterday, Mojang’s Markus “Notch” Persson addressed fan requests for a Wii U version of the wildly popular sandbox game via Twitter. Unfortunately, the news isn’t terribly hopeful.

An error occurred while retrieving the Tweet. It might have been deleted.

The studio has a lot on its plate, with Scrolls still in development, Minecraft Realms in beta, and Cobalt in alpha. Minecraft is currently on PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, PC, and mobile devices. It’s coming to Xbox One and PlayStation 4, also. 4J Studios has handled the ports to console.

Our Take
It’s possible that Mojang could team up with 4J Studios or another developer willing to bring Minecraft to Wii U. For now though, it’s best to keep your hopes in check.
