by Mike Futter on Dec 05, 2013 at 01:30 PM

Update: A new trailer shows off some of the PlayStation 4 exclusive features of A Realm Reborn, including Vita remote play. Trailer is at bottom of story.

Original story:

The PlayStation 4 has sold over 2.1 million consoles in North America, Europe, and Latin America. The console isn't coming until February 22, in Japan, and it will be bringing with it Square Enix's latest MMO.

The PlayStation 4 beta for Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn will begin on February 22, 2014. The title is expected to launch in April 2014. Producer and director Naoki Yoshida will be showing off the new platform version on Saturday, December 14. During that broadcast, viewers can also see patch 2.1 content, which is scheduled for release on December 17.

The broadcast can be viewed here. For more on Final Fantasy XIV, you can read Joe Juba's championing of the title during our Fight for the Top 50 Challenge. You can also read Ben Hanson's response to the challenge.

Our Take
Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn is a remarkable turnaround. Square Enix's first attempt with the title was a complete and total failure, alienating fans and costing the publisher enormous amounts of money. A Realm Reborn is, by most accounts, a great experience that shrugs off its troubled history. Many bad games don't get second chances, but it looks like Final Fantasy XIV deserves the one it got.
