Latest South Park Episode Tackles Console War

by Mike Trinh on Nov 14, 2013 at 06:00 AM

South Park has referenced video games numerous times, and the episodes have often been hilarious (I'm thinking especially of the "Chinpoko Mon" and "Make Love, Not Warcraft" episodes). Now, the show is poking fun at the console war between the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

In yesterday's episode, called "Black Friday", the 4th graders decide to work together to fight the crowds on Black Friday to get the next-gen consoles at a low price. But when they disagree about which console to get, the group splinters, forcing Kyle and Stan to take opposing sides.

Both the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One get hit with a fair number of jokes, with most of the humor aimed at dogmatic loyalty to one "superior" console.

As you have probably noticed from the picture above, the kids sport the same outfits that they wear in South Park: The Stick of Truth, the upcoming RPG from Obsidian and Ubisoft. Cartman takes a jab at the delay of the game in the episode and criticizes the practice of preordering as well.

The episode also parodies Game of Thrones, as manipulation and betrayal takes hold within the two groups. Stan's dad, Randy, even joins South Park's version of the Night's Watch, the mall security guard team.

Below is a short preview for the "Black Friday", which can be watched in full at South Park Studios. The episode ends in a cliffhanger so expect a second part to hit next week.

South Park: The Stick of Truth will be released on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC on March 4, 2014. Check out our impressions of the 10 minute trailer for the game at New York Comic Con.
