Custom Magic: The Gathering Cards Celebrate Indies And Are Designed For Play

by Mike Futter on Oct 24, 2013 at 04:07 AM

Magic: The Gathering has been around for 20 years, and in that time the game has grown and matured alongside its player base. It's also spawned a number of custom formats, one of which is "the cube."

The cube is a large set of cards designed to play well together that are then split into 15-card packs and "drafted" by players into new decks for each play. A group of well-known indie personalities have taken that one step further and created a set of cards that pay homage to the best (and worst) of indie development.

Included in the set are 360 cards split amongst the five colors of magic (White, Blue, Black, Red, Green) along with multi-colored and uncolored groups. Each has custom artwork, and the set includes new keyword abilities and creature types.

The team of Andy Hull (Spelunky), George Fan (Plants vs. Zombies), Edmund McMillen (Super Meat Boy), Tommy Refenes (Super Meat Boy), Kyle Pulver (Snapshot), Laura Shigihara (Composer on Plants vs. Zombies, To the Moon, World of Warcraft), Derek Yu (Spelunky) have put together something really special. You can check out the full visual spoiler (pictures of all the cards) on the Indie Custom Cube website.
