Eidos Montreal Announces Deus Ex: Universe For Next-Gen & Beyond

by Matthew Kato on Oct 02, 2013 at 04:49 AM

Now that Thief developer Eidos Montreal has resurrected the Deus Ex franchise, it's continuing it into the next-generation of home consoles and more with Deus Ex: Universe.

Deus Ex: Universe kicks off with a next-gen/PC title, but also extends to a larger franchise world that Eidos Montreal is creating.

"The concept behind Deus Ex: Universe is to create an ongoing, expanding, and connected game world built across a generation of core games," writes David Anfossi, the head of the Eidos Montreal studio in the company's blog. "It's a commitment on our part to deliver meaningful content that expands the franchise on a regular basis and to deliver a deep conspiracy that will span several connected Deus Ex games, creating a more immersive and richer experience than ever before."

Anfossi goes on to say that the Universe brand will extend to tablets, smartphones, books, and other mediums and platforms. Eidos Montreal is handling the development on the next-gen game, but Anfossi did not specify if it will handle some of these other projects.

The first artwork for the game (click the below image for an enlarged version) shows off one of the themes of Universe: "trans-humanism segregation." Here this group of people have created their own enclave and "reshaped their environment, nostalgic for their ideal of Cyber Renaissance."

No release timeframe was given for the next-gen/PC Deus Ex: Universe game.

Our Take:
Hopefully publisher Square Enix is fully committed to see this project through to the end, because a involving, large-scale Deus Ex world sounds exciting.
