New The Last Of Us Developer Diary Explores Joel And Ellie

by Mike Futter on Sep 11, 2013 at 03:52 AM

In a new, spoiler-free developer diary, the cast and crew behind Naughty Dog's The Last of Us come together to explore the protagonists of the story. Joel and Ellie are more than characters in a game, they are embodiments of a world gone by and an unvarnished life in a devastated society respectively.

The developer diary below contains concept art, interviews with voice actors Troy Baker and Ashley Johnson, and a deeper understanding of how the story was crafted. You can also read our review of The Last of Us.

Our Take
The Last of Us is more than just a tense survival experience, it's an exploration of humanity. Joel and Ellie represent the old and the new, and watching the two of them work out their relationship is more compelling than if either had existed alone.

There are moments toward the end of the game that are more satisfying because of the path walked by the duo throughout the game. Regardless of your feeling on the conclusion, it's hard to argue that the path to the end isn't worth treading.
