Unity SDK Comes To Facebook

by Mike Futter on Aug 28, 2013 at 09:05 PM

Unity is fast becoming a popular development tool for those looking to easily bring their games to iOS, Android, and the web. Now, Unity developers can also bring their wares to the 260 million people playing on Facebook with a cross-platform kit.

The new SDK allows developers to more easily port existing titles and utilize Facebook's social features. According to the information provided by Facebook, the process is as simple as including one more line of code, filling out a few fields in the developer app, and providing the URL of the game.

The intent is to bring a greater depth of core gaming to Facebook users. For developers, it means a new audience and increased revenue streams with minimal effort. Cmune's Uberstrike, Madfinger's Shadowgun: Deadzone, and Nival's King's Bounty: Legions are three titles already available on Facebook desktop and mobile.

Our Take
Unity games have seen a usership increase from 30 million to 90 million just this year. I have no doubt that number is about to grow even faster with the new flood of mobile titles.

Facebook needs a shot in the arm, and there are some great games built on Unity. Facebook has been considered a hub for casual gaming, and this provides an opportunity to start rebranding.
