Free Halo: Spartan Assault Operation Hydra Update Adds Xbox 360 Controller Support

by Kyle Hilliard on Aug 27, 2013 at 07:48 AM

Halo: Spartan Assault is getting a free add-on and update with Operation Hydra, and Xbox 360 controller support is coming with it.

The add-on will be available for free on August 29 and it will add five new missions, new achievements, make certain weapons that were only available through micro-transactions unlockable with experience, and add the ability to play the game with an Xbox 360 controller.

The phone version of Spartan Assault originally released exclusively for Verizon devices, but now that game is available on all Windows 8 phones.

Our Take
I'm really happy to see the game getting controller support. I wrote
our review, and though I think it is a good game, I was confused as to why it didn't offer controller support. I am sure that will be the most fluid and approachable way to play the game. Ultimately I would like to see it come to Xbox Live Arcade, and I am hopeful that adding controller support means it is a possibility.

Operation Hydra Brings New Gameplay and Features to “Halo: Spartan Assault” on August 29
The expansion to 343 Industries’ first mobile “Halo” title adds five new missions, new achievements, and more

Spartans suit back up, because the mobile fight against the Covenant is far from over. Today, 343 Industries in conjunction with Vanguard Games unveiled Operation Hydra, the expansion to “Halo: Spartan Assault” available for digital download on August 29. Available on Windows 8 devices and Windows 8 Phone, “Halo: Spartan Assault” is the top paid app in the Windows 8 store since its launch in July and the fastest grossing Xbox Live title in the Windows Phone Store*. Operation Hydra adds five all-new missions for fans to battle through, including new achievements on Xbox Live.

Rejoin Spartan Sarah Palmer as you intercept a haunting alien signal after the destruction of planet Draetheus V, and follow the signal to the core of the planet’s moon where you’ll discover its terrifying source. Fight with Palmer and embark on a series of new missions and new environments as you try to unravel a mystery that hits surprisingly close to home.

The expansion also adds support for wired Xbox 360 controllers, enabling you to control Spartan-IV soldiers via the familiar Xbox peripheral on Windows 8 PCs and tablets. In addition, power weapons previously only available via in-app purchase can now be bought using XP.

Launching alongside Operation Hydra, a 512MB version of “Halo: Spartan Assault” is now available for download in the Windows 8 Phone Store for all carriers. A free demo version of “Halo: Spartan assault” featuring one mission and a gameplay tutorial will be available as a free download on August 30.
