Bungie Co-Founder Jason Jones Opens Up On Bungie Day About Halo's Overpowered Pistol

by Kyle Hilliard on Jul 07, 2013 at 09:23 AM

Bungie's co-founder and director on Halo, Halo 2, and Destiny, hasn't done a lot of interviews, but in honor of Bungie Day (which is today) Jones granted one where he talked about Halo 1's overpowered pistol.

In the first of a three-part interview with IGN, Jones talked about the mythical nature behind behind Halo 1's pistol. As the rumor goes, Jones increased the power of the pistol by changing the code at the last second, right before the game was shipped, and he did it without anybody knowing. He confirms the rumor, but not without letting it remain a little ambiguous:

“What we did feel comfortable doing was changing the code, and so… I added code specifically, when the map was loaded, to change a single number on the pistol. Whether that was ‘ninja style’ or not,” he says with a laugh, “I’ll be happy to let you decide.”

Head here to read the full interview with Bungie's notoriously shy Jason Jones where he talks about the the process of managing such a huge development team, and how Halo might have been different if the team was starting development on it today. Jones claims that the pistol's power, however, would remain the same.
