Metal Gear Solid V Kicks Off Microsoft's E3 Event

by Joe Juba on Jun 10, 2013 at 06:58 AM

Microsoft opened its E3 press conference with an extended trailer for Metal Gear Solid V, showing off many changes to the series’ traditional formula.

Konami had previously announced the game’s open-world nature, but the video highlighted how that works. Snake (now with a ponytail) can commandeer transportation like horses, tanks, and jeeps to get around the world. Stealth is even still possible in these situations; in one case, Snake sneaked past a group of guards by hanging off the side of his horse.

We also got a closer look at some of the characters. Previously revealed characters like Ocelot and Miller reappear, but we met new members of the crew like a sniper who doesn’t speak, and a young man who is dressed more like he belongs in an RPG than a Metal Gear game.

On the story front, the trailer emphasizes the continued transformation of Big Boss from hero to anti-hero, with a handful of references to men becoming demons.

After the trailer, Kojima took the stage with Microsoft’s Don Mattrick, but he did not elaborate much on the contents. Fortunately, Metal Gear Solid fans enjoy speculation.
