Reader Discussion: What Were Your Favorite '80s Gaming Moments?
In honor of the release of Far Cry: Blood Dragon we'd like to take moment to relive some of our favorite gaming moments from the '80s.
I was a kid in the '80s. I remember riding my bike through the creek after school and playing with Super Soaker in the park, but some of my favorite memories from my childhood center on games. Ms. Pac-Man was one of the first games I ever played and I remember thinking it was the best thing ever and begging my parents for quarters so I could try to get past the first maze (it took me a long time.) Ms. Pac-Man was also the first version of Pac-Man I had ever seen, so I thought it was the original game. In fact, years later, when I finally came across the original Pac-Man cabinet, it felt really surreal, like I had just seen one of my relatives naked.
Later in the decade, my buddy Terry and I became obsessed with the NES game Double Dragon II: The Revenge. However, neither of us owned the game, and our parents wouldn't buy it for us, so every weekend we would scrounge around for change until we have enough to rent it, then we'd ride our bikes down to the local video store. One week we rented the Jaws video game instead and immediately regretted it. We went back to Double Dragon the next week. I think we spent enough money renting it that our parents probably should have just bought the game for us.
