Famed Film Critic Roger Ebert Has Passed Away

by Mike Futter on Apr 04, 2013 at 12:53 PM

Two days ago, before passing away at the age of 70, Roger Ebert made known his intentions to slow down a bit. In fact, he was going to embrace the dream of critics everywhere: review only the movies he wanted to. Game enthusiasts may have had a prickly relationship with Roger Ebert due to his stance on the medium, but his eloquent writing style and well-stated (if controversial) opinions are to be admired. It's also important to recall that Ebert later acknowledged the flaw in his argument.

He leaves behind a legacy of insightful criticism and a passion for the written word. Additionally, YouTube has preserved one final reminder that Roger Ebert did have hands-on experience playing video games. You may have forgotten all about the Sega Activator, and it's even more likely you have never seen this clip from Siskel & Ebert's 1993 Holiday Gift Guide.

Thank you, Roger, for your inspiration. We’ll miss you.
