Epic's Mark Rein Gives Props To The PS4's Developer-Friendly Architecture
Epic's vice president has sung the praises of the PlayStation 4 and Sony's decision to switch to a more familiar architecture for the upcoming home console.
"I think it's a very smart move on Sony's behalf to build this sort of enhanced PC architecture and then put so much in it," Rein told CVG.
Rein was also impressed with the PS4's 8GB of memory and its convenience features like playing games while they are downloading and background updates. "It's like giving you the world's best PC," he said. "The kind of stuff that they announced that they're doing, the level of convenience and things like that... they're making a really perfect gaming PC."
Making the PS4 more friendly to developers with its x86-64 AMD CPU was something that the system's lead architect, Mark Cerny, says was a conscious choice.
Epic is currently working on Unreal Engine 4, which is being used for unnamed PlayStation 4 and other next-gen titles.
Rein also mentioned Microsoft and its next Xbox in the interview, noting that he expects it to be similarly powerful and developer/user-friendly as the PS4.
