Torment: Tides Of Numenera Website Launches

by Matt Miller on Feb 21, 2013 at 10:15 AM

The spiritual successor to the acclaimed Planescape: Torment is set in a brand new fantasy/sci-fi game world.

Brian Fargo of inXile revealed some time ago that his team had plans to work on a new Torment game. While the Planescape universe is still part of the Dungeons & Dragons fiction, the Torment aesthetic and concept is carrying over into this new project, which should be welcome news to gamers who recall the deep conversation-driven and atmospheric storyline of the original game.

This week saw the launch of an official website for the game, indicating forward momentum on the project that fans should be excited about.

Adding excitement to the reveal is that the new Torment game is set in the world of Numenera. Numenera is a still-in-production tabletop role-playing game being crafted by Monte Cook, whose tabletop gaming credits are extensive, including work on the 3rd edition of Dungeons & Dragons. The new role-playing game universe is a far future version of Earth; eight varied ancient civilizations have risen and fallen, leaving behind a wealth of powerful relics and technology. The inhabitants of the ninth world wander the ruins of these fallen powers, and build a life in the wreckage.

Torment: Tides of Numenera is likely a long ways away, as inXile is still working on completing production of Wasteland 2. Nonetheless, I’m fascinated by the world of Numenera, as well as the promise of a new Torment game. How about you?
