NCsoft Licensing Unreal Engine 4

by Adam Biessener on Feb 14, 2013 at 04:57 AM

Epic Games announced today that it has entered into a long-term deal with the Korean MMO publisher/developer for use of its next-gen game engine.

“Unreal Engine 4 is an extremely fascinating game engine in terms of its unprecedented efficiency and performance,” said NCsoft chief product officer James Bae via press release. “We plan to release our best game ever using our Unreal Engine expertise and the new state-of-the-art Unreal Engine 4 tools.”

NCsoft has yet to reveal which projects will use Unreal Engine 4, or how many games the deal covers. Given the long development cycle for MMOs, any games using UE4 are surely still unannounced.

NCsoft has a long history of using Epic's engines in its Korean-developed games, from Lineage to Lineage II through the upcoming Blade & Soul. The company's games have almost always been on the cutting edge of graphics for their time, and this move should help them retain that distinction moving forward.
