Ziff Davis Acquires IGN
Over the last few days there have been rumblings of Ziff Davis, an American publisher and Internet company, acquiring IGN. We now have confirmation that IGN and all its affiliated sites have been acquired by j2 Global, a cloud-based communications and storage messaging provider, through its Ziff Davis subsidiary.
Nobody knows exactly how much IGN’s former owner, News Corp, sold the site and its affiliates for. We do know that the price was less than the $100 million News Corp. was initially asking for. News Corp. bought IGN back in 2005 for $650 million.
In late 2012, j2 Global acquired Ziff Davis for $167 million, following Ziff’s financial troubles. You may have heard of Ziff Davis because the company once controlled EGM and 1UP. Those gaming outlets were sold back in 2009 to the Hearst Corporation, then were shuttered shortly after the acquisition. In 2011, News Corp. acquired the Hearst properties, including the deceased EGM and 1UP.
This leads up to current day, with Ziff Davis acquiring IGN. It’s been a long, winding road, but we hope the best for IGN during the transition.
