Dark Souls 2 director Tomohiro Shibuya says the sequel won't be as inaccessible as its predecessor. In an effort to appeal to newer players, he told Edge that the game "will be more straightforward and understandable."

This seems odd, considering that the appeal of the franchise is due largely in part to the non-linear approach to combat and exploration. The Dark Souls 2 trailer, which premiered during the 2012 Spike VGAs, still exudes a grim atmosphere. If Shibuya and company can increase accessibility while maintaining the difficulty of earlier entries, they may have an even more successful title on their hands.
