Square Signs On For Extended Unreal Engine 3 And 4 License

by Jeff Cork on Oct 23, 2012 at 04:16 AM

Square Enix and Epic Games have announced a licensing deal between the two companies, which allows Square to develop games using Epic's Unreal Engine 3 and 4. The companies previously announced that Square would be developing games using Unreal Engine 3, but adding Unreal Engine 4 adds a new wrinkle to the partnership.

“Epic has a strong relationship with Square Enix, and it’s an honor to provide their creative and technical talent with the best game technology available for licensing,” saysTaka Kawasaki, territory manager of Epic Games Japan. “We look forward to supporting their developers with world-class tools for years to come.”

Square points to the recent mobile game Demons' Score as one of the fruits of the Unreal Engine 3 deal.

The company showed off a realtime demo using its proprietary engine at E3 2012. While Square may indeed be using this new tech to develop games under its Final Fantasy banner, it's likely that Unreal will power the bulk of its upcoming titles. Unreal is becoming more ubiquitous over time, and it's easier (and speedier) for developers to create games using existing tech rather than starting from scratch using unproven tools.
