Rare American Final Fantasy II NES Cartridge Offered For $50K On Ebay

by Matt Helgeson on Aug 23, 2012 at 03:13 PM

In July, a collection of over 7,000 games sold for over $1 million. Now, a one-of-a-kind American Final Fantasy II NES prototype cartridge is listed for $50,000.

For many years, Final Fantasy II was unavailable to English-speaking players, as Square canceled the U.S. release of the game and instead released Final Fantasy IV (retitled for the U.S. as Final Fantasy II) for the ascendent Super NES. The NES Final Fantasy II would not see a proper release in the U.S. until it was included on the Final Fantasy Origins collection in 2003.

However, Square did produce a demonstration cartridge of the U.S. version of the game, which was shown at the 1991 Winter Consumer Electronics Show. The owner of this rare cartridge is now selling it on eBay -- and the bidding has been frenzied so far, with over 109 offers. However, the "Buy It Now" price is $50,000. That's steep for some old plastic and silicon. To prove its the real deal, the seller has posted a video on YouTube showing the cartridge being played.

If you'd like to buy it, you can do so on the eBay auction page.
