Sins Of A Solar Empire: Rebellion Is Stardock's Fastest-Selling Game

by Josh Straub on Jul 25, 2012 at 10:00 AM

Because of the success of Stardock's latest title, its next game will be download only.

The indie developer received mixed feedback when it announced that the free standing expansion to the space-based RTS would be only available through download. However, after releasing Sins of a Solar Empire: Rebellion on Impulse, Steam, and directly through Gamestop.com, Stardock broke a record for the bestselling fastest-selling [Correction: Rebellion is not the best-selling but the fastest-selling title from Stardock] game in the company's history, with 100,000 units sold as of press time. As a result the company is reevaluating its strategy and allowing their upcoming games, The Political Machine 2012 and Elemental: Fallen Enchantress, to skip retail all together.

If they continue to use this strategy Stardock will be able to set release dates for when its games reach a certain quality standard, rather than having to push to fill reserved shelf space. It is unclear what impact this will have on Stardock's overall sales, but anything that allows games to maintain consistently good quality seems like a good move.
