Prepare For Mars Rover Landing With Free Kinect Game

by Jeff Marchiafava on Jul 16, 2012 at 12:30 PM

NASA is hoping to drum up interest in its August 6 rover landing with an educational game that's free for Kinect owners.

The game is called Mars Rover Landing, and allows players to try landing a rover on the martian landscape for themselves. The game uses Kinect, however, so we're guessing it will be slightly less scientific than what NASA will go through to land Curiosity on Mars next month. Regardless, NASA sees it as a way to get more people interested in space exploration, and to celebrate the upcoming landing.

"Technology is making it possible for the public to participate in exploration as they never have before," said Michelle Viotti, the Mars public engagement manager at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory. "Because Mars exploration is fundamentally a shared human endeavor, we want everyone around the globe to have the most immersive experience possible."

You can find out more about the game and the Curiosity mission at NASA's Mars Science Laboratory website.
