by Jack Gardner on Jul 06, 2012 at 11:30 AM

The biggest fighting game tournament of the year is already underway and will be continuing through the championships on Sunday. EVO has once again proven that it is one of the biggest eSports events of the year. Today, over 5,000 of the best players in the world have converged on Las Vegas to compete for honor, glory, and over $100,000 in the various fighting games.

The games making appearances this year are:

- Soul Calibur V

- Street Fighter X Tekken Finals

- Mortal Kombat

- King of Fighters XIII

- Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3

- Super Street Fighter IV Arcade Edition

There will also be side streams of:

- Virtua Fighter 5: Final Showdown

- Persona 4 Arena

- BlazBlue

- Melty Blood

- Guilty Gear

The tournament schedule and streaming hub can be found here.

One of the exciting aspects of this year’s EVO, other than it being on track to smash previous attendance and viewing records, is that a scholarship program is being introduced for gamers pursuing a degree in game design, game development, or computer science at an accredited university. Pay-for-view HD streaming of the tournament will fund the scholarship. Tom Cannon, SRK founder and president, as well as EVO co-founder even promised to fund the scholarship out of his own pocket if pay-for-view fails to cover costs.

Cannon’s full statement regarding the scholarship can be read here.
