Resident Evil Creator Interested In Open-World Genre

Shinji Mikami has expressed interest in creating his own sandbox game.

Inspired by his love of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim (above), Mikami has indicated an interest in the open-world genre beyond that of a fan. He told magazine PSM3 that he thinks his love of the game stems from the depth of gameplay common to the genre and the fact that "There are very few... It's not like there are dozens of them yet."

Mikami states that if he did create his own open-world game it would be smaller: "We don't have hundreds of staff, so I'd keep it simple. I'd introduce one major rule, but within that you'd be free to play it however you like. It would be a game that mixes the best of the old kind of games with this relatively new open-world concept."

Being that Mikami's Tango Gameworks studio has been purchased by Bethesda owners ZeniMax, you can bet he'll get to study the genre from one of its masters. Regardless of size limitations, an open-world game with Mikami's creative power behind it would definitely be worth playing.
