Pick A New Cover Athlete Sidekick For Tiger Woods PGA Tour 13

by Matt Bertz on Oct 03, 2011 at 08:10 AM

With Tiger's golf game and public image still suffering after his highly publicized divorce in 2009, EA is allowing fans to pick some secondary cover athletes for the next edition of the popular series.

As it did with Madden NFL 12, EA Sports has set up a tournament style bracket on Facebook featuring the cover candidates. The winners from the North American and European brackets of the popularity contest will appear on the regional covers of the game alongside Tiger Woods. Stateside fans can pick between Ben Crane, Rickie Fowler, Jim Furyk, Dustin Johnson, Zach Johnson, Hunter Mahan, Rocco Mediate, and Bubba Watson. The Euros can choose between current #1 Luke Donald, Rory McIlroy, Paul Casey, Ross Fisher, Graeme McDowell, Edoardo Molinari, Ian Poulter, and Justin Rose. The biggest name missing from the list is Lee Westwood, who originally dethroned Tiger as the top golfer in the world. The winners will be announced on October 24.

This marks the third straight year that EA marketers have marginalized Tiger Woods in the cover design. In 11, they placed phenom Rory McIlroy on the cover, and last year they chose to go with a shot of the Augusta National Golf Club instead of using Tiger's mug. If Tiger continues to struggle on the golf course this year, you have to wonder if EA could drop his name from the game altogether. That is definitely justifiable considering he is currently ranked #50 in the world, his lowest ranking since his first year on the tour in 1996. He also hasn't won a major championship since 2008, or a regular PGA tournament since 2009.

EA also announced that this will be the first edition of the game to support Kinect on Xbox 360.

Tiger Woods PGA Tour 13 comes out next March.
